Barbeito Wines was founded in 1946 by Mário Barbeito de Vasconcelos. The Madeira wine industry was in decline when they started, however, from the initial 80 producers they belong to the group of 8 producers that survived till today!

Barbeito used to be part of the bulk wine business during the 70’s, but it was in the 80’s that they started to realize that this practice was affecting the quality of their wines and, therefore, in 1991 the decision of stopping to export was made by Ricardo Diogo Vasconcelos Freitas. It was also in this year that they started a joint venture with the Kinoshita family.

Until today, Ricardo Freitas continues to keep is efforts in ageing, producing and blending the best quality wines. With his background as a historian, he finds great pleasure in finding hidden and antique barrels like a Bual from 1912 or a Malvasia from 1926.
